Causes of lower back pain in pregnant women

“Lower back pain is common in pregnant women” is not a satisfactory answer for those who want to find the causes and reasons behind their pain. We would say before finding a solution or remedy for this back pain one must be familiar with the main causes and reasons. Identification of proper reasons can be beneficial in finding suitable remedies. We can classify major causes into four categories.

  • Posture changes

Center of gravity changes in the women during the pregnancy process. Gradually it becomes difficult for them to maintain their posture which eventually results in lower back pain or strains.

  • Stress

Emotional stress is linked with muscular tension in women. Sometimes back spasms can be linked with the emotional stress of a pregnant woman. Women fighting with financial hardships or social responsibilities usually have a high tendency for emotional stress.

  • Hormone changes

In the second half of pregnancy women usually have high production of relaxing hormones which promotes ligaments in the joints and pelvic areas which sometimes cause instability in the spine. In this situation, a woman experiences intensive lower back pain.

  • Weight gain

Last but not the least and most important cause of lower back pain is gaining weight during this process. On average women gain more than pounds 25 weight which put pressure on their spine and blood vessels resulting in lower back pain.

Home remedies and tips

Home remedies and tips can be useful to reduce lower back pain. These methods usually involve home-based objects, exercises, and diet. Here in this section, we have listed a few tips and home remedies which may help you.

  • Avoid sleeping on your back. You should try to sleep on your side. You can use a few pillows to put it in under your abdomen or bend your knees with pillows.
  • Try using massage and heating pads. If you feel a heating pad is not good for your lower back pain, then you can change it with ice packs. If heating is not good for you then cooling will definitely work.
  • Start wearing flat shoes. You should buy flat and comfortable shoes with flexible shoe soles.
  • If you have to lift an object you should squat down and lift that object with your legs while avoiding pressure or bending your back.
  • Try to maintain a healthy diet. You should prepare a diet chart to maintain a balance of nutrients.
  • Try to find a leisure activity or hobby to spend a good time. It will help you in maintaining your emotional stress.
  • Avoid unnecessary drugs and medicines unless recommended by your physician.
  • Find a fitness consultant nearby your house to start prenatal yoga.

Avoiding lower back pain during pregnancy

Sometimes hormonal changes cannot be a reason behind your lower back pain. The valid reason behind continuous lower back pain can be linked with your inappropriate activity or careless behaviour. The inexperienced woman usually does not give sufficient attention to “don’t do things”. The result is continuous lower back pain. We are stating below a few points that must be avoided during pregnancy otherwise you will keep experiencing lower back pain.

  • You should not wear heels, especially high heels. Wearing high heels means putting your legs and pelvic areas under stress. From the beginning of your pregnancy, you should avoid wearing high heel shoes and sandals.
  • Avoid using a bad-condition mattress. Your bed should be straight with a good-condition mattress. A bad-condition mattress may not provide you support while sleeping. This may cause intense lower back pain.
  • Avoid twisting your spine while walking, exercising, or lifting weight.
  • Avoid sleepless nights. You should be careful about your diet and sleep routines. Awaking at night to watch movies and scrolling down Internet content can cause emotional distress.
  • Avoid going to dance parties.
  • If you are going to a shopping centre, then carry bags with both hands or at least both sides to create balance. Losing balance can be dangerous.
  • Avoid unnecessary climbing on stairs or ladders.

Medical treatment

Lower back pain can be a reason for a medical condition. You may have a health issue of serious concern. Sometimes women perceived that their back pain is normal. Somehow it can be a cause of any health issue which immediately requires you to contact your midwife or GP. You must contact them if you are having any of these issues.

  1. If you feel that body under your ribs is paining.
  2. If you feel bleeding while peeing with intense lower back pain.
  3. Lower back pain can be a sign of early labour during the third trimester. Again, in this situation, a midwife or GP should be immediately contacted.
